Introducing Cornish Kern ... And Your Chance To Win Some!
In The Beginning ... there was Cornish Yarg, made by Lynher Dairy. Very successful, and you could fairly descibe it as a modern classic. Now, it's taken Lynher a long, long time to produce a follow-up, but Cornish Kern is finally here. And my goodness it's been worth the wait!
Cornish Kern is quite different - it's longer-matured (16 months), more solid in texture and much more intense than Yarg. Catherine Mead and her team have been working on this for years: starting with the idea of a gouda-type recipe, the cheese evolved, and - with the addition of Alpine starter cultures - the result has something of the flavour you might associate with Comté or Gruyère.
We just received our first Kerns a couple of weeks ago but only tried it yesterday ... we're now very excited: I think this is one you do need to try ...
Cornish Kern Competition
We'll be giving away one eighth of a Cornish Kern - that's about 430g - plus what we call an 'Add-On 3' (biscuits, chutney and a set preserve), all of which is worth just over £20 + delivery. All in all, a great chance to try this really exciting new cheese, for nowt! To enter, just answer this question:
Q: In the Cornish language, what does 'Kern' mean?
You'll find a clue here.
Then just send an email to competition@thecheeseshed.com with your answer, making sure you put Kern Competition in the subject line.
We'll draw a name out of the hat on Friday 12th May and get in touch with the winner.
Note: We'll be adding the names of entrants to our newsletter mailing list. Of course, if you don't want to receive these, you can unsubscribe very easily.
