The Somerset Pomona
Distilling apples in England was last recorded in 1678 ... but revived by the Somerset Cider Brandy Company in 1987.
Julian Temperley has created his version of the French pineau, but where that is a mixture of cognac and grape juice, The Somerset Pomona is a blend of cider brandy and apple juice, which is then left to mature in oak barrels. The name comes from the Roman Goddess of fruit.
Says The Daily Telegraph: "The result is a complex, nutty, toffee-laden delight ... like a port wine, exotically spicy and excellent with cheese".
